A portrait of Victorian stage legends Henry Irving and Ellen Terry, and their partnership.
Set in the golden age of the Victorian theatre, Grace Pervades explores the extraordinary partnership between Sir Henry Irving, the first actor to be knighted, and Ellen Terry, the most celebrated actress of her generation. At the height of their fame, their collaboration at London’s Lyceum Theatre redefined performance, fame, and artistic ambition. For Irving, the theatre was an all-consuming pursuit; for Terry, it was one part of a richly complex life.
Written by acclaimed playwright David Hare (Skylight, Plenty, The Power of Yes), the play examines the relationship between two towering figures whose shared devotion to the stage transformed British theatre. Hare’s script draws from letters, memoirs, and theatrical history to illuminate how public success and private sacrifice intertwined in their celebrated partnership.
The production stars Ralph Fiennes (Schindler’s List, The English Patient) as Henry Irving, praised for a “focused, luminous, magnetic” performance (Whatsonstage), alongside Miranda Raison (Spooks, Anne Boleyn) as Ellen Terry, described as “exceptional” (Guardian). Following a sold-out run at Theatre Royal Bath, the play transfers to London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket for a strictly limited season.
